Court Orders INEC to Register NDP

Rule of Law Prevails as Court Grants NDP Full Political Recognition

The National Democratic Party has recorded a major legal and democratic victory following a landmark judgment by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

In a ruling delivered on February 16, 2026, the court ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to officially register the NDP as a political party, affirming that the association had met all constitutional and statutory requirements.

The case, filed by the party's leadership, challenged INEC's earlier refusal to grant registration. Delivering judgment, the court declared that the decision to deny registration was null and void, emphasizing that the party had fully complied with the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution, the Electoral Act 2022, and INEC's regulatory guidelines.

Justice M. G. Umar further ruled that INEC has a legal obligation to register the party without delay and grant it all rights and privileges due to a recognized political party in Nigeria.

In addition to nullifying INEC's earlier rejection, the court issued a direct order compelling the commission to issue the NDP a certificate of registration, effectively granting the party full legal recognition.

Reacting to the judgment, party leadership described the ruling as a historic victory for democracy, transparency, and the rule of law, noting that it reinforces the constitutional right of Nigerians to freely associate and participate in the political process.

This development marks a significant milestone not only for the NDP but also for Nigeria's democratic system, highlighting the role of the judiciary in upholding fairness and due process in political participation.
